Music Topics
1.  What are the musical skills I need to use JazzTrainerAS effectively ? To use JazzTrainerAS effectively you should already have had some experience in improvisation. You should know the meaning of the common chord symbols and the intervals, and be able to play major scales fluently in every key.
2.  What instruments can I use JazzTrainerAS with ? JazzTrainerAS can be used with all instruments that you can melodically improvise on - including vocals. A transpose function and a fine tune function allow any adjustments to be made.
3.  How could practicing given melody lines help my improvising ? The exercises given in JazzTrainerAS - if properly practiced - will enable your ear (your musical imagination) and your fingers to spontaneously find the right notes in a musical situation without you having to think about it.
4.  Why is there no standard notation in JazzTrainerAS ? A great advantage of standard notation - the ease of execution - turns out to be a disadvantage when it comes to acquiring the given melody lines. These should be analysed and played by heart in all keys (one by one), while reading the chord changes from the chord chart. Reading music examples in standard notation on the other hand, will tempt you to move on too fast without really digesting things.
Computer & Installation
1.  What are the general technical requirements that my computer has to match to run JazzTrainerAS ? The screen of your computer (resolution 1024 x 600 pixel min.) should be visible from your normal playing position at the instrument - just like a music sheet on the stand.
The sound output of your computer should be connected to an audio system. The sound quality of built-in computer speakers (in laptops in particular) is not sufficient for this purpose.
2.  What are the system requirements that my computer has to match ? The speed of your computer's CPU should be at least 500MHz (recommended: 1GHz and faster).
3.  On which computer operating systems can I run JazzTrainerAS ? JazzTrainerAS can be run on Windows operating systems - 98 / ME / NT4 / 2000 / XP / Vista / 7 - and also on Mac OS X version 10.3 and higher.
4.  Do I need additional software to run JazzTrainerAS ? A software called JAVA is needed. This is included in Mac OS X (version 10.3 or higher). In Windows you will need a JAVA software in version 5.0 or higher, which is not part of the operating system, but is available as a free download.
5.  (Win) Where can I find a JAVA version for Win98 / WinME ? The latest JAVA version will match Windows operating systems 2000 and newer only.
There is also a JAVA Download for Win98 or WinME on the java.com website.
6.  (Win) I installed JAVA, but I cannot run JazzTrainerAS - why ? Certain data compressing software (e.g. WINRAR) may cause problems with JazzTrainerAS. On start of JazzTrainerAS, the data compressing software might open and suggest to unpack the 'Executable Java File JazzTrainerAS.jar'. Due to the default settings of the software, these would automatically attach to files with the suffix *.jar, thereby disabling the java application. If so, a reinstallation of JAVA would be necessary. Make sure to alter the settings of the data compressing software first.
7.  (Win) Why is there no sound if I select 'JAVA Soundbank' ? In the Windows version of JazzTrainerAS you will normally get the instruments sounds from your computer's sound card. Alternatively you can choose in menu Extras > Sounds... > JAVA Soundbank to get the sounds from the JAVA software. Unfortunately the soundbank is not included if you proceed the (normal) 'Java Online Installation'. Download JAVA again and make sure to opt for Offline Installation.
8.  (Mac) Message: 'There is no default application specified to open the document.' What can I do ? Click Cancel. Make sure that the JazzTrainerAS program file is selected, go to the menu bar and click File > Open With > Other.... In the following dialog select this path: System > Library > CoreServices > Jar Launcher, additionally select x Always Open With, then Open.
9.  (Mac) How can I move JazzTrainerAS to the Mac Dock ? JazzTrainerAS is rated a document (attached to the jar launcher application) rather than an application by the operating system. So you will have to move it to the 'file' section of the Mac Dock (right-hand of / below the thin separator line).
10.  How can I prevent a loss of User fingerings / User rhythms I entered in JazzTrainerAS ? JazzTrainerAS versions up to 1.6:
The folder on your computer that contains the program file 'JazzTrainerAS.jar' is also where the program will create a file named 'users.dat' on first start. In this file your user fingerings and user rhythms will be stored. To save the data you entered, make a backup of this 'users.dat' file on an external storage device (eg. USB stick). After re-installing JazzTrainerAS copy the 'users.dat' backup file from the external device into your new program folder (make sure to close the program before). If there is an 'users.dat' already existing, overwrite it. Your user data will now be accessible in the re-installed program.

JazzTrainerAS versions from 1.7:
All the settings and adjustments you make, as well as all the user rhythms and fingerings you created, will be stored by the program in a user database file named "jt_db.dat". It has a constant size of about 75MB and it is located in the computer user's folder. In case this file would get damaged or deleted these data would be lost irreversibly. To prevent this, we recommend you make backup copies of this database file regularly using the program's export/import function to transfer the file to another medium - e.g. a CD-R or an external hard disc drive. In case of loss the data can be re-imported from the backup.
11.  How can I import my User fingerings / User rhythms I entered in JazzTrainerAS from a former program version or a backup file ? Please note that, by proceeding as described here, it is not possible to transfer individual data from one database file to another or to merge data - the file can only be exchanged as a whole.
Choose in JazzTrainerAS menu Extras > Backup > Import User Database .... A dialog opens for selecting the requested database file. Unlike the current program version former versions up to 1.6 used two separate database files for user settings (settings.dat) and user rhythms/fingerings (users.dat). These files are located i the old JazzTrainerAS program folder, and can be read into the current database by the program's Import function. To read in both files the import function needs to be proceeded twice.
